NOW FOR A FEW WHALE TALES!

DID YOU KNOW?

--There are nearly 80 different kinds of whale.

--The blue whale is the biggest animal ever to have lived on Earth. A blue whale may grow 100 feet long. That means eight elephants could stand along its back.

--The blue whale's huge heart is as big as a small car.

--A full grown blue whale, a very hearty eater, eats about two tons of food every day. That's twice the weight of food you eat in one year.

--The whale's breath is called its blow or spout. The blue whale's spout is about 30 feet high or two times the height of a giraffe.

--Whales have no problem communicating with each other because they can hear each other across many miles. The blue whale's voice can travel 50 miles! The best known of the whale singers is the Humpback. Their songs have lots of different sounds--long moans, grunts, clicks, whistles, and squeals.

--A blue whale calf grows very fast. At birth the calf is as long and heavy as a truck and by the time it is 6 months old it is twice as big as when it was born--almost 45 feet long. In order to grow this quickly, a newborn calf drinks about 25 gallons of milk in just one day.

--At two years of age the blue whale calf is on its own and continues to live for about 60 years. Some may even live to be 100.
